About this course
Content
The basis for evaluation and analysis of traffic safety, environmental impacts and energy consumption related to design and regulation of the road and street network, and how this network is applied by different road user groups. Main course elements are: (1) Traffic safety (TS): National TS activities. Methods for analysis of accident level and effects of TS measures. Traffic safety audits and inspections. The traffic safety part amounts to about 60% of the course (2a) Pollution: Emissions and dust particles from road traffic. Limit values. Impacts related to traffic load, speed and driving pattern. Measures to reduce pollution. (2b) Road traffic noise: Overview of the noise problem. Limit values. Noise calculation. Noise reducing measures. (2c) Energy consumption: Road traffic energy consumption in a national and a local perspective. Energy consumption reducing measures.
Learning outcomes
The goal of this topic is to provide basic knowledge of principles for design of roads and streets in urban areas, and knowledge of analysis methods for estimation of road design and traffic on traffic safety and environmental factors.
Teaching methods
Lectures, individual and group exercises, partly as field studies. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
