About this course

Content

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) from a technical point of view. Spatial data models, topology, network operations, cartographic generalization, information theory and other elements that are behind a GIS. In a project work the students will be enabled to use some of this technology by development of a map-based application.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

The student is supposed to have knowledge about

  • Basic concepts for handling geographic information
  • How to use Fuzzy Sets in connection with geographic information
  • How to organize topological connections between geographic objects
  • Technology for the portrayal of geographic information on the Internet
  • Data structures for the representation of geographic information in various dimensions
  • Important algorithms used in geographic information systems (GIS)
  • Information theory and cartographic communication
  • Techniques for cartographic animations
  • 3D GIS and network analysis
  • Quality and uncertainty in geographic information

Skills

The student is supposed to know how to:

  • Choose the suitable data structure and use it for geographic objects
  • Implement a map application (Web, pad, mobile unit) where elements from the discussed technology are used
  • Make a map application that have 2-way interaction with a data base
  • Make a map application, within a given theme, which has a carefully considered and good user interface
  • Make a map application where the cartographic content is communicated in a good way and in accordance with the theory

General competence

The student is supposed to know how to:

  • Handling geographic data in a computer
  • Give a well considered presentation of geographic information in an electronic media
