Geographic Information Systems, Basic Course

The subject provides a basic education in how a geographic information system works and how it can be used. The students will get an insight in existing data in Norway and how these can be used within their own field. The subject is suitable for students that want to learn how to handle geographic data within their own field as well as it is a basic subject for students specializing on Geomatics.

Knowledge

The student is supposed to have knowledge about:

• The most used reference systems and map projections in Norway
• Techniques for collecting geographical data
• "Norway Digital" and which data included here
• How raster and vector based methods for handling geographical information works
• How to use various data for various anaysisanalysis
• Communications and visualization of geographic information

Skills

The student is supposed to know how to:

• Handle data from "Norway Digital"
• Use these data for analysis
• Use correct reference system and map projection when handling geographic information
• Understand and use raster and vector based systems for geographic information
• Make good cartographic presentations based on geographic information

General competence

The student is supposed to know how to

• See various use of geographic information ( and systems) within their own field
• Handle and analyze geographical information

Up to 5 interactive collections, up to 10 practice guides and up to 10 online learning modules. Use of GIS software packages for analysis and presentation of geographic information.
