About this course

Content

Development of E6-east in Trondheim is used as an example to to gain insight in how a large project is planned, orgainised and executed. Lectures will be given on central aspect of the project and the students will work with selected problems.
Focus areas will be:
- Quality assurance of large projects with respect to relevance, feasability and sustainability in a bearing capacity perspective.
- Planning of road project illustrated by using the planning tool NovaPoint. Coordinate and height systems which are used on a construction site and on maps in Norway.
- Organisation and managment of large projects.
- Life Cycle Analyses illustrated by optimisation of asphalt type tested in the laboratory.
- Land utilization, generation of traffic, traffic safety and challanges in urban areas.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge:
- Knowledge about how large construction projects are planned, developed and how the quality assurance are done in concept, building and operation phase.
- Knowledge about how projects are justified based on needs.
- Knowledge about how economical, social and environmental effects of projects are documented throughout the lifetime of the project.
- Knowledge about how large construction projects are organised and managed.
- Knowledge about asphalt materials and how different choice in the building phase influence the operation phase.
- Knowledge about the need for transport in society and how land use for different purposes influence on these need.
- Knowledge of the coordinate and height systems which are used in Norway.

Skills:
- Ability to use modern tools (Novapoint) for planning and geometric desing of a road section.
- Ability to perform simple need/goal analyses
- Ability to perform simple sustainability analyses
- Ability to perform laboratory tests.
- Ability to perform simple calculations using height and coordinate values.

General knowledge:
- Training in solving engineering tasks as part of a group
- Ability to write a structured and clear report from engineering work
- Increase understanding of sustainability in the civil engineering industry.

Teaching methods

Lectures, laboratory exercises, written exercises, project team work. There will also be a mandatory web-based course in basic health, safety and environmental work (HSE). If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
