Highway and Environment

The subject will focus on the basic principles of highway design, road geometry and alignment, cross-section design, subgrade and pavement materials, pavement design, surfacing materials, climatic and environmental factors, aesthetics and adaptation to surroundings.

Knowledge:
- Basic principles for highway planning.
- Alignment, geometric design of roads and adjustment to the surroundings.
- Properties of pavement materials.

Skills:
- Design a road alignment with good adaptation to the surroundings.
- Evaluate structural and frost properties of pavement materials.
- Investigate strength properties of pavement materials by laboratory tests.

General competence:
- Acquire knowledge on basic principles for highway planning.
- Perform a reasonable choice of materials for pavement layers/elements.
- Evaluate environmental consequences of the localization and layout of a road.

Lectures, exercises and a laboratory course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
