About this course

Content

Structural analysis of loadbearing brick and block masonry. Structural design of walls, columns and beams in unreinforced and reinforced masonry. Production of masonry and properties of constituents. Application of simple structural models for calculation and design of building parts and detailing. Masonry construction work is also included.

Learning outcomes

The course will provide basic knowledge in calculation and design of masonry structures and masonry buildings including repair and renovation.

Knowledge

The candidate should have knowledge of:

  • Structural analysis of loadbearing brick and block masonry.
  • Structural design of walls, columns and beams in unreinforced and reinforced masonry.
  • Production of masonry and properties of constituents.
  • Application of simple structural models for calculation and design of building parts and detailing.
  • Engineering, design and construction of building elements and details.
  • Repair of typical masonry damages.
  • Masonry construction work is also included

Skills

The candidate is able to:

  • Structural design of walls, columns and beams
  • Explain the static behavior of masonry structures
  • Selection of measures for moisture protection, heat insulation, sound insulation and fire insulation of masonry structures
  • Design of movement joints
  • Selection of materials and execution for durable masonry structures including for typical repairs and renovations.
  • Draft design and material use in building parts and their joints

General competence

The candidate has:

  • An understanding of requirements, influences and physical and material relations as a basis for designing assemblies and buildings that fulfill requirements regarding reliability, performance and sustainability.
  • Competence in using the digital SINTEF Building Research Design Guides for verification of regulatory requirements for masonry buildings
  • A good background for communicating with other disciplines (architect, structural engineer, HVAC engineer, electrical engineer, fire safety engineer etc.) involved in design, construction and operation of buildings.

Teaching methods

Lectures and compulsory calculation and laboratory exercises. Norwegian masonry terminology will be emphasized giving the lectures in Norwegian. The course is delivered in cooperation with Department for Structural Design.
