About this course

Content

The course consists of four parts; design of 1) structural systems and of 2) building envelopes, 3) an introduction to computer-aided design (CAD) and 4) Building prosess. The lectures in these topics will be held sequentially. The following topics will be covered: - Regulations and standards. - Probabilistic framework for design calculations. - Loads and analysis of load effects. - Design principles, determination of construction materials. - Structural behaviour and selection of load bearing systems. - Functional and performance requirements for design of building envelopes. - Selection of materials for building detailing. - Building envelopes; construction principles and detailing. - Fire safety and design. - Introduction to sound and installations in buildings. - Construction drawings and detailing. - Construction planning and construction methods. - Facility management. - Building process, project life cycle, organizing and contracts.

Learning outcomes

The course provides an introduction in design work for buildings and building structures based on the theory of safety, and on the common requirements of the public to the reliability, functionality and sustainability of buildings. After completing the course the students should have obtained the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge about safety and function of loadbearing structures.
  • Knowledge of loads, load effects and choice of loadbearing structures.
  • Knowledge of climatic conditions as a basis for the choice of materials and building design.
  • Knowledge of the building envelope, principles of construction and building details.
  • Knowledge of fire safety design.
  • Knowledge about building process.

Skills:

  • Be able to analyze the function of the loadbearing structures and the building envelope
  • Be able to develop and quality ensure relevant solutions for the loadbearing structures and the building envelope
  • Be able to communicate by use of drawings, and to have obtained basic skills in computer aided design (CAD).

General competence:

  • Have obtained ability to analyze critically the design and material use in building assemblies.
  • Be able to cooperate and contribute to interdisciplinary interaction.
  • Developed ability to understand drawings of buildings.
  • Understand and use basic terms in building processes.

Teaching methods

The course is taught through traditional lectures as well as through project based learning in teams, and traditional exercises. This course is a result of cooperation between several departments of the Faculty.
