About this course

Content

Mechanics: velocity, acceleration and forces in two dimensions, work and energy conservation in mechanical systems, rotation of rigid bodies.
Fluid dynamics: pressure, buoyancy, fluid flow basic and including energy losses.
Composition of matter: atoms, periodic table, theory of chemical bonding, inorganic nomenclature, properties of gases.
Chemical reactions: stoichiometry, chemical equilibrium, acids and bases, redox reactions, electrochemistry.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge

• The candidate has knowledge of physical subjects that are fundamental to technological topics.
• The candidate has knowledge of the central topics of the course, and can define and explain the most important concepts of classical mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and basic chemistry.

Skills
• The candidate can solve problems related to classical mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
• The candidate can perform calculations with the quantities and units of the SI system and controls conversion between units.
• The candidate can identify variables that occur in idealized models with physical magnitudes of reality.
• The candidate can conduct experimental work by doing measurements, as well as interpreting and documenting the results.
• The candidate can describe atomic structure and bindings between atoms.
• The candidate can name simple inorganic compounds.
• The candidate can perform calculations on various types of chemical reactions.
• The candidate can use and navigate in chemical tables.

Competence
• Candidates can communicate with others about scientific problems by using physical and chemical concepts and quantities.
• The candidate understands the ambition of physics, which is to describe natural phenomena by quantitative models.
