Sustainable Development

-Global trends and global risks (e.g. global warming, poverty, economic crises, deforestation, social stratification, etc.) and their interconnections.
-Sustainable Development concept (definitions, timeline, main documents, principles, actors and actions, challenges, critics).
-Examples of sustainable practices on the different levels (e.g. individual, community, organization, manufacturing, city, country, etc.)
-Introduction to sustainability assessment for different levels (e.g. product, process, organization, city, country, etc.)

After completing the course, the student is supposed to have the following:
Knowledge:
-Advanced knowledge of sustainable development concept.
-Knowledge of sustainable practices.
-Knowledge of sustainability assessment.
 
Skills:
-Ability to identify problem areas in organization/city/country/etc. and possible solutions.
-Ability to apply a concept of sustainable development for problem solving process.
 
General competence:
-Integrate sustainability view into everyday decision-making.
-Have understanding of the advantages of sustainable development concept and its challenges.
-Be able to identify practices that can improve sustainability performance of a system.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, e-learning, project work, and group work.
The course will be made accessible for both on-campus and remote students. Every student is free to choose the pedagogic arrangement form that is best fitted for her/his own requirement. The lectures in the course will be given on campus and are open for both categories of students. Lectures that sum up the main issues in the lecture will also be available on internet through NTNU’s learning management system. Tutoring are given at campus in accordance to announced times.
In addition, for remote students there will be at least one gathering at campus with mandatory attendance.
In order to complete the coursework requirements, all hand-ins must be approved before exam
The standard language is English. All hand-ins, project work, and exam must be written in English.
