Content
This course deals with the relationship between Swahili language and politics in East Africa in the past and present. The following topics will be emphasized: Swahili ideology, political organization and nation building, Swahili as a tool for political control, emancipation or social justice, standard Swahili and national politics and the political language of Swahili in texts in East Africa.
Learning outcomes
The objective of the course is to present a deeper analysis of the relationship between Swahili language and politics in East Africa to generate an awareness of the factors influencing East Africa's political climate and its people.
Teaching methods
Lectures and exercises.
Assessment: One-week take-home exam. The size of the take-home exam depends partly on the subject, but is usually between 6-12 typed A4-pages (line spacing 1.5).
