Swahili Language 2

This course offers an in-depth introduction to Swahili grammar and oral use, translation and language comprehension. The course includes exercises in reading and translating to and from Swahili based on texts that cover political, social and cultural topics. This course may be included in the Bachelor program in African studies.

Knowledge

The candidate:

- Has an intermediate knoweldge of Swahili phonetics and phonology.
- Has additional knowledge of Swahili morphology, its morphosyntax and syntax, such as verbal inflection and verbal derivation.
- Has an intermediate knowledge of vocabulary and expressions in both written and spoken Swahili.

Skills

The candidate:

- Achieves in-depth use of vocabulary in Swahili for advanced tasks and complex communication in daily life.
- Attains an intermediate knowledge of grammatical rules, word structure and word order.
- Can demonstrate knowledge of complex sentence constructions in both written and spoken Swahili.
- Can do translations and understand texts at the intermediate level.
- Can compose descriptive and narrative texts and write about persons and events.

Lectures and practical exercises in oral and written skills.
Obligatory assignments consists of 1 exercise in language comprehension, 1 exercise in grammar, 1 essay (200-300 words) and 1 exercise in translation.
Obligatory exercises must be approved before students are allowed to take the written and oral exam.
