Swahili Language 1

This course offers an introduction to the structure of the language and covers topics in the syntax, phonology, morphology and morphosyntax of Swahili. The course also offers a basic introduction to oral usage, translation and language comprehension. The course may be taken as a part of the bachelor's degree in African studies.

Knowledge
The candidate:

- Has basic knowledge of Swahili phonetics and phonology
- Has basic knowledge of Swahili morphology, its morphosyntax and syntax
- Has basic knowledge of vocabulary and expressions in both written and spoken Swahili

Skills
The candidate:

- Achieves essential mastery in the use of vocabulary for everyday conversation
- Attains basic knowledge of grammatical rules of inflection, word structure and word order
- Attains a good knowledge of sentence construction, translation and comprehension
- Can compose simple texts and describe persons and events
- Can engage in basic conversation in Swahili

Lectures and practical exercises in oral and written skills. Obligatory assignments consists of 1 exercise in language comprehension, 2 essays (150-200 words), 1 exercise in grammar and 1 translation exercise.
Obligatory exercises have to be approved before students are allowed to take the written exam.
