Statistics for Social Sciences

An introduction to probability calculation and basic methods and concepts in statistics. More
precisely the following subjects are discussed: data collection, descriptive statistics, basic probability calculations, probability distributions (normal and binomial distribution), sampling
distributions, statistical inference for one- and two-sample data, chi square tests, analysis of
variance and simple linear regression.

1. Knowledge. The student knows the basic concepts and methods of collection, description
and interpretation of statistical data. This includes knowledge of elementary probability and
basic probability distributions (in particular the normal distribution and the binomial distribution), graphical methods for presentation of data, description of population and sample, and
the principles of statistical inference. The student has a basic knowledge of point estimation,
confidence intervals and hypothesis testing, and their applications in statistical inference for
one and two samples, chi-square testing, analysis of variance and linear regression analysis.
2. Skills. The student is able to perform simple probability calculations. The student can
recognise standard statistical situations and perform statistical inference based on simple
sample data.

Lectures and compulsory exercises. Written final examination is the basis for the grade
awarded in the course. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
