Informal language learning

The course is about informal language learning and is aimed at language teachers in Norwegian as a second language, French, Spanish and English. The main focus is on learning languages outside the classroom and on how to connect formal and informal language learning. The course provides an introduction to several theoretical perspectives on the concept of informal language learning and what this knowledge can mean for teaching practice. Examples are given of informal language learning activities, of how to promote pupils' second language activities outside the classroom, and of how these activities can be integrated into classroom teaching.

• has knowledge of empirical research on informal language learning and how different second language theoretical approaches and pedagogical theory can explain aspects of informal language learning
• has knowledge of different types of informal language learning activities
• demonstrates knowledge of how to link informal language learning to language teaching

• can apply relevant second language theory and pedagogical theory to reflect on language learning processes that take place in informal settings
• can apply research-based knowledge of informal language learning to plan, implement and reflect on their own teaching
• can apply knowledge of arenas for informal learning to guide the pupils and build bridges between informal and formal learning

• can apply research-based knowledge in the development of their teaching practice

The course is purely web-based. The activities in the course are largely based on the participants' experiences and teaching practice, and a combination of individual work and reflection and practical work in groups is planned. There will be 2-3 online lectures/seminars during the semester, but otherwise the learning work will take place asynchronously. Teaching materials and assignments will be available on NTNU's platform for digital courses.
