Literature in the Spanish Language

The course gives an introduction to Spanish and Latin American literature from the 20th and 21st century. It gives a general view of the most important writers and representative texts in various genres from various literary eras. The course also gives a brief introduction to important methods of literary analysis.

A candidate who has passed the course is expected to have obtained the following learning outcome in accordance with the description of the course in the course programme, defined as knowledge, skills and general qualifications:

KNOWLEDGE

The candidate:

• is expected to have a basic knowledge about important Spanish speaking authors
• is expected to have detailed knowledge about a selection of Spanish speaking literary texts from various genres and eras
• is expected to have basic knowledge about theory, terminology and analytical tools within Spanish literary science

SKILLS

The candidate:

• is expected to be able to understand and interpret various types of Spanish texts
• is expected to be able to utilise his/her knowledge to reflect on and discuss important problems within Spanish literary science, both orally and in writing
• is expected to gain further knowledge within this academic field

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The candidate:

• is expected to be able to perform analytical reasoning
• is expected to present and discuss problems, views and solutions, both orally and in writing
• is expected to be able to talk to people with different backgrounds on a general level

Lectures and seminars. The course demands a high degree of student activity, both through preparations at home and oral participation in lectures and seminars.

75% attendance to lectures and seminars is required. Absence above 25% requires an application at the start of the semester.

Students will complete three mandatory assignments during the semester, of which at least one is an oral presentation.

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.
