Nursing  care for  patients admitted to hospital for treatment  and assessment Nursing care  for parient with serious and life threatening  illness Nursing care for terminal patients Nursing care for the patients´next of kin Nursing  care  for children and their next of kin

Knowledge: After having completed the course, the student has knowledge about:

• Illness and conditions that influence the patient´s health
• Basic needs of patients with acute, critical  and surgical illness
• Nursing care  for dying patients and their next of kin
• Communication with patients  with  surgical illness, and understands the importance of information and counsel to patients and their next og kin
• Individual health promotion and disease prevention
• Medication  administration in a surgical ward
• Nursing documentation in specialized health care services
• Relevant laws and regulations
• The competence of other professional groups

Skills: After completing  the course, the student should  be able  to:

• Providing  nursing care for patients with acute, critical  surgical conditions
• Apply relevant knowledge in the delivery of nursing care
• Document nursing care based on the nursing process
• Communicate and cooperate with patients and their  next of kin
• Give information, and counsel patients and  their next of kin
• Communicate and cooperate with other nurses and professional groups
• Promote health  and prevent further disease for individual patients 
• Administer medications safely  and responsibly
• Plan and deliver nursing  care independently
• Deliver safe nursing care  in accordance with professional ethics and relevant laws and regulation 

General competence: After completing the course, the student should:

• Demonstrate a critical - analytical attitude towards nursing and the health care  services
• Deliver evidence-based nursing with a caring attitude
