Master's Thesis in Sociology

The Master Thesis must include a scientific analysis of a sociological topic preferably related to one of the specialization courses.

The thesis should be between 70-80 pages, and must not exceed more than 32 000 words (table of contents, reference list and attachments are excluded).

The thesis must be individual work written as a monograph.

The student must participate in the compulsory master's thesis seminars. It is necessary for the students to follow the compulsory seminars in order to maintain progress.

Supervision constitutes a substantial part of the work with the thesis. This ensures that the student is offered the necessary knowledge and involves an essential control of the collecting and treatment of data, within ethical research guidelines. Supervision is therefore a compulsory part of the study program for students who wish to submit a Master's Thesis.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• learn how to carry out independent research.
• through the use of obligatory supervision receive an insight into the research process and different levels: engage in constructive and critical evaluation of others research, plan research in combination with others, collect data, analysis and treatment of data.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• carry out independent research work.
• through work on a Master's Dissertation, acquire skills that are useful not only in relation to research but also, for example, in relation to investigative work, teaching, journalism, etc.

Compulsory master's thesis seminars and supervision. It is necessary for the students to follow the compulsory seminars in order to maintain progress.

The subject of the thesis must be approved by the department. Every student must sign a master's thesis agreement which, among other things, regulates supervision. Submission of the master's thesis agreement is before September 15 in the fall semester. The deadline of the thesis is May 31 in the spring semester.
