Inequalities, Welfare and Integration

The course problematizes key sociological discussions on inequalities, integration and welfare, including their inherent relationships. The lectures focuses primarily on central theoretical perspectives and theories, however also present key empirical contributions, from both the Norwegian society and the global community. The discussions are anchored in analyses of key societal challenges, such as the future of the welfare state, migration patterns, crime, poverty, labor markets and technology. The course combines class room discussions with students' own empirical investigations, primarily through their work with the term papers.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• have understanding of key sociological perspectives on inequalities, welfare and integration.
• have understanding of important empirical contributions to these fields of sociological study, both nationally and internationally.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• accomplish own empirical analysis of aspects of inequalities, welfare and integration in the contemporary society.
• present their analysis, orally and in written texts.

The course combines a variety of learning activities (lectures, seminars, presentations, excursions and other).

If 6 or fewer students attend the course the two first weeeks of teaching, the course will be given as an individual study course with supervision.
