Work and Organization

The purpose of this course is to provide the students with a general overview of current research and the most central issues of debate in Norwegian and international work and organization sociology, including new forms of organization, new technology and gender. The course will discuss current issues, and the theme of the course may therefore vary from time to time. The students will write a 15-20 pages long (5600-7500 words) term paper where they will analyze one of the topics from the lectures.

Knowledge - the student shall:
- know the key discussions and newer research in the Norwegian and international fields of the Sociology of Work and Organization.
- know how to reflect critically about how changes in work life, due to new technology and new forms of organization, change working conditions for different social groups.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
- treat one of the many themes which has been discussed during lectures in an independent manner through written work.

Lectures and seminars.
Form of assessment: Individual term paper and oral examination. The oral exam may be used to adjust the grade by one unit on the scale. The oral exam will include the research paper, the individually selected readings and the required readings. If less than 6 students attend the course the two first weeeks of teaching, the course will be given as an individual study course with supervision.
