About this course

Content

The course covers theories which explain how media and communication relate to social life and society. It presents perspectives on media development and on the relationship between mass media and network media. As part of the course the students must have an oral presentation which critically analyze theories, methods and results in media- and communcationresearch.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - the student shall:

  • have a fundamental knowledge of the central theories in the Media and Communications discipline.
  • have a basic knowledge of the approaches within the social science of how to study the media's role in society.
  • have knowledge on the relationship between the traditional media and network media.
  • be able to reflect and critically evaluate theory tied to Media and Communications.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • through written and oral means, treat themes which have been discussed in instruction in an independent manner.

Teaching methods

Lectures and seminars equivalent to 2 hours a week, includes supervision in groups and individually. Compulsory activity: Oral presentation. Parts of the lectures can be held in English. Form of assessment: 4 hours written exam
