Sociological Theory

This course provides insight, practical experience, and tools to understand the structures that shape human interaction, power relations, and institutions. The aim is for students to critically explore and apply theoretical concepts by questioning what appears self-evident, and by recognizing and interpreting connections where others may see only coincidences. Sociological theory, ranging from classical to contemporary perspectives, opens the way for deep reflection on how societies function and how they can be transformed.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• have knowledge about the sociological discipline
• have knowledge of classical and contemporary sociological theories and perspectives.
• have knowledge of key contemporary academic discussions within sociology.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• recognize different theoretical positions in academic texts, and understand the implications of these.
• summarize, analyze and criticize sociological theories and perspectives.
• present sociological theories and perspectives.
• develop their own theoretical analyzes.
• guide students/ peers work with theoretical questions.
