Inequality and Welfare

The course provides an introduction to sociological theories of social inequality and how the welfare state and different institutions produce integration or increased inequality. The distribution of benefits and living conditions, chances in life, marginalization and integration will be discussed with examples from education, family, working life, health, migration etc. and related to both local, regional, national and global contexts. It will vary each year which topics and examples are emphasized.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• through the presentation and examination of key theories and approaches have a basic sociological understanding of how social inequality occurs and is counteracted, in different contexts and welfare regimes.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• use theories and approaches to analyze current issues in the field of social inequality and welfare.

4 hours of lectures and seminars every week throughout the semester according to the lecture plan. The compulsory activities can only be completed in the spring semester.
