Theories and Models in Sociology

This course examines the relationship between different research designs, theories and models in sociological research. The course emphasizes how sociological theory is used and developed in practical research. Furthermore, it provides insight into how different sociological paradigms have different approaches to the relationship between theory and empiricism. An important aim of the course is to train the students in reflexivity, disciplined creativity and the ability to assess research quality in the face of specific research programs.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• recognize different uses of theories, models and research designs in sociology.
• be able to account for how different sociological research and theory traditions handle the relationship between theory and empiricism, and how this in turn is related to the use of specific research methods.

Skills - the students shall demonstrate the ability to:

• learn to reflect on the sociological relevance of research problems.
• learn to assess the relationship between theory and data in empirical research, and where the research can be placed within different sociological traditions.
• acquire a grip for theorizing.

Intensive lectures/ seminars equivalent to 4 hours per week the first half of the semester. The compulsory activities can only be completed in the spring semester.
