About this course

Content

  • Introduction to optimization theory - linear models with a focus on transport planning
  • Introduction to spreadsheet modeling (Excel)
  • Traditional route planning problems (TSP and VRP) with different model formulations (Arc-flow and path-flow) and solution methods for these
  • Network models for use in optimization
  • Optimization and freight transport - distribution routes, transport network
  • Public transport route planning
  • Route planning in air transport

Learning outcomes

It is expected that when the student completes this course, they should have:

Knowledge:

  • Basic understanding of optimization theory, with a focus on transport planning and distribution
  • Understanding of basic models for route planning that are relevant for transport companies, with associated solution methods
  • Theoretical understanding of tools and techniques for evaluating routes and distribution logistics

Skills:

  • Be able to present and evaluate production and distribution plans for a company based on linear optimization theory and models in Excel
  • Be able to make decisions based on theory and understanding of existing infrastructure
  • Be able to use relevant tools and models within transport as a basis for decisions
  • Be able to analyze the organization’s needs for transport services

General competence:

Be able to develop a broad understanding of route planning practices and be able to design transport plans that ensure business value in relation to time, customer service and good (optimal) resource utilization.
