• Academic training: - Using, evaluating and citing sources - Using word processors, search engines.
• Writing: - Writing different types of texts, including reflection texts, articles and summaries - Topic sentences and paragraph structure - Basic Norwegian grammar and spelling.
• English - Writing summaries - Academic style, sentence structure and vocabulary - Basic English grammar and spelling.
• Communication - Basic communication theory - Objectives - Technical language - Meetings and presentations - Preparation and implementation of oral presentations - Planning, organisation and implementation of meetings - Planning and implementation of project tasks - Collaboration in groups.

Candidates who have passed this course

Knowledge

• have knowledge about communication processes and how language varies according to context, goal and audience
• have knowledge about the role of cultural factors in communication processes

Skills

• can define goals of communication and choose the appropriate level and register according to audience and context
• can structure texts and use relevant devices for form and text coherence
• can express themselves in writing in various functional texts that may be relevant for engineers
• can plan, structure and carry out oral presentations in both Norwegian and English in various settings
• can analyze the use of various devices in non-fiction and professional and argumentative writing

General competence

• can write texts fit for purpose, for example project documents
• can communicate well in groups
• can plan and carry out meetings and discussions
• can collect information from a variety of sources, use sources critically in their own writing and cite sources appropriately.
• can communicate well in writing and orally in both Norwegian and English through various media

Students need to bring their own PC and install relevant software. Some tasks may require the use of a smartphone with a camera.
