Teacher Leadership and Peer-mentoring in the English Subject discipline

The course gives in-depth knowledge about how participants independently can lead development processes related to the English subject discipline in their own school. Elements included in the course are academic school development, peer mentoring, development of local school curricula with a focus on students’ academic progress, and designing teaching in the subject-discipline, including interdisciplinarity.

Knowledge

The candidate has

• advanced research-based knowledge about how teacher leadership and peer mentoring can contribute to changing and improving teaching and learning practices within the English subject discipline in school
• in-depth knowledge about how to support and stimulate peer teachers as part of school-based competence development in the English subject discipline
• thorough knowledge of various approaches to subject specific teaching design within the English subject discipline

Skills

The candidate can

• initiate and lead development projects at their own workplace and within the English subject discipline
• reflect on, analyse and critically evaluate, both research- and experience based, and both independently and with peers, aspects related to planning and managing development projects within the English subject discipline

General competence

The candidate can

• lead and critically evaluate the development of local school curricula and of designing teaching within the English subject discipline, including interdisciplinary work
• share and communicate research results relevant for the teaching and learning of English

The course is organized as three meetings on campus during the semester. Between the campus meetings, participants need to study course literature, work with different learning tasks and course requirements, and participate on the learning platform. The teaching will include lectures, group work and discussions, practical learning activities, oral presentations, and written work. A continuous aspect of the course relates to the participants’ own development of academic writing and reading skills.

Active participation is expected throughout the whole semester. Some of the course material on the reading list may be in Norwegian, but most of the teaching and communication will take place in English. It is therefore expected that participants will use English actively during teaching sessions and in oral and written communication with peers and teachers.
