Discourse theories of language and communication

This course provides students with detailed knowledge of key concepts, theories and models in the field, primarily emphasizing theories of language as social action and sociocultural perspectives on communication. This includes focusing on how we create meaning in and through communication and which function utterances and texts have in specific communication situations. Dialogic and interactionist perspectives on language and communication are emphasized. Given that much of the theoretical foundation arises from research into either verbal or written communication, the course will also emphasize the interaction between different modalities (speech, text, signs) and how these can be understood and studied.

Teaching methods and activities are dialogue-based, requiring active participation from the students. The teaching requires students to acquire theoretical knowledge and apply this knowledge in critical reflection. The course uses flipped classroom, where students work on chosen concepts and theories in plenary sessions and in groups.
