International internship

The internship will provide students with insight into human behaviour and social challenges, to promote welfare and sustainability in diverse international contexts. It will offer students the opportunity to apply the qualifications and knowledge acquired through their study programme in practical settings. The experience gained from the internship will enhance the student’s awareness of their own competencies, contribute to their academic and professional development, and constitute valuable work experience that will be both appreciated and beneficial in a future professional career.

During the internship, students will complete an independent assignment resulting in an individual report. This assignment must meet the academic requirements of a master’s programme and be grounded in relevant theories, topics, and concepts related to the field of study. Examples of research areas covered by the programme, and to which the internship project may relate, include: social work in international contexts, social change, inclusion and exclusion, mobility and cultural knowledge, disability, cross-cultural services, understandings, and knowledge transfer.

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge:

• have acquired in-depth knowledge of how an organisation works in practice with social inequality affecting vulnerable groups, or with services aimed at improving their welfare within an international context.

Skills:

• can conduct an independent project where they apply the academic knowledge they have acquired in social work related to concrete challenges.

General competence:

• have practical work experience and competence in developing networks, writing reports, and engaging in analysis that connects theory and practice.

The students will have individual supervision from both NTNU and the company/organisation. Students can establish contact with companies/organisations on their own. NTNU assists in establishing contact at the start of the course if the student has not established this on their own.

Students undertaking the course must register in NTNU Mobility within the regular deadlines: 1 February for the autumn semester and 12 September for the spring semester. Those registered in NTNU Mobility will receive follow-up and preparation for the exchange period during the semester preceding their departure. The duration of the stay abroad is optional; however, it must be at least 5 weeks to qualify for travel support or a grant.
