Global Inequality

Many pressing problems of the world find explanation in different forms of inequality. In this course, we trace inequality across time and space in new ways and within a context of cross-cultural and comparative perspectives. You will learn about current social issues relating to various forms of inequality, approached through anthropological theory and empirical studies. The topics are related to ongoing studies in the Anthropologies of Sustainability research group.

Examples include issues relating to modernization, urbanization, gender and human rights, neoliberalism, ethnicity, climate and environment.

A student who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:

Knowledge

• has knowledge of theories on global inequalities.
• has insight into how to assess theories based on empirical studies

Skills

• can describe perspectives and theories regarding global inequalities.
• can choose theories strategically to analyse a current issue.

• have consciousness about the social and political significance of inequality for the affected people and for our global community.
• can critically assess inequality from the point of view of the weak.
• have Ability to see unequal relations from community and scholarly perspectives.
