Scientific Seminars in Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry

The course consists of a 3-day mandatory field-trip for new students (first semester), where one of the activities is to perform a case-study as team-work. There are guest lectures by external scientists from other universities, research institutes and private industry. In addition, each student has to give two progress presentations of their master´s project; early in the study to discuss the hypothesis and the scientific plan (i), and towards the end of the study to discuss results and interpretations (ii). In the beginning of each autumn semester, there is a two hour course in presentation technique. There will be some seminars where the purpose is to discuss current literature and important scientific topics. The seminars require active involvement and participation from students.

Knowledge

• The students will acquire a broad knowledge in both environmental toxicology and environmental chemistry through presentations and discussions in the course.
• From own and fellow students presentations, students will achieve knowledge about theories and relevant methods and hypothesis testing, including experimental analysis, statistical techniques and other tools to analyse and solve toxicological or chemical issues in research and management.
• From presentations and group discussions the students will achieve knowledge about UN´s sustainability goals, especially those concerning the environment, sustainability, and climate change on a local and global scale.

Skills

• The students will acquire the ability to critically present own research methods and results in an understandable, and at the same time in scientific proper manner.
• They will also gain the ability to critically and constructively contribute to develop the projects of fellow students.

General competence

• The students will acquire competence on presenting their own scientific methods and results, and contribute to develop research of fellow students.
