Qualitative Methodology 2

The course builds on the basic understanding of qualitative research. The course goes in depth through the most common data collection methods (in-depth interview and focus group interview) and the most central analysis approaches used in qualitative research within psychology. The course further introduces the various criteria used to assess the quality of qualitative research work.

Knowledge:

• The student has acquired in-depth knowledge of the most common qualitative data collection methods and analytical approaches used in psychological research (e.g., thematic analysis, grounded theory, interpretative phenomenological analysis, and discursive psychology)
• The student is familiar with relevant software used for analysing qualitative data, including tools for literature analysis.

Skills:

• The student can independently collect and analyze unstructured qualitative data to shed light on research issues in connection to their main thesis, bachelor's thesis and in other contexts.
• Students can code data, develop themes and assess the quality of research where qualitative analysis approaches are used.
• Students can use software (e.g. NVivo) in the analysis of qualitative data.

General competence:

• The student has developed a critical perspective to assess the strengths and limitations of the research design, including the analyzes used.
• The student can, under supervision, carry out a qualitative research project, including data collection, analysis and presentation of the results in accordance with established practice (APA) and comply with ethical guidelines and current legislation that involves health research.

Method of teaching: Lectures, seminars, and exercises. Some lectures will be given in English.
