Content
Biological Psychology 1 is an introductory course that deals with the biological basis of human behavior and mental awareness, both at neuronal and system levels. The scientific content of the course covers principles related to the basic structure and function of the brain. Specific topics include sensory systems/perception (vision, smell, touch, pain, hearing), emotions, stress, gender/behavior, memory, language, and mental disorders. A brief description of central methods used in the field of biological psychology is also incorporated.
Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
After completing the course, the student should have acquired a substantial understanding of the biological basis associated with perception, consciousness, and behavior. In addition, the student should have established knowledge about the general principles of the nervous system including brain functioning. The student should also be familiar with key methods used in the research field of biological psychology.
Skills:
After completing the course, the student should be competent to analyze and discuss scientific issues within the relevant subject area. Besides, the student should be able to write a text that is suitable for professional dissemination.
General competence:
After completing the course, the student should have developed a scientific attitude including the ability to think logically and independently. In addition, the student should have established the ability of critical reflection comprising respect for scientific data and assessment of ethical values.
Teaching methods
Lectures 2 hours per week, colloquium.
Some lectures might be given in English.
