Theories of Democracy

The course examines definitions of and conditions for democracy, rooted in Western political theory. The relationship between the individual and the state, constitutions and individual rights are also discussed.

Knowledge - the student shall:

• have knowledge of the definitions of the assumptions of democracy that are rooted in western political theory.
• have knowledge of the relationship between individuals and the state, constitutions and individual rights.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

• discuss theories about democracy in both an oral and written manner.

Lectures/group discussions, equivalent to 4 hours per week throughout the semester. The course may be taught intensive in the first half of the semester. Students are expected to participate in class activities, including presentations, and are required to deliver compulsory assignments. The language of instruction can be English or Norwegian.
