Democracy and Citizenship in Education

The course builds on the educational goal: to educate for democratic citizenship in an increasingly pluralistic society. Theories on citizenship and democracy is emphasized. Theory relevant for the analysis of policy documents, improve learning and do research in the field is included. The course also explore challenges related to increased immigration and greater plurality in society.
Furthermore, theories on national- and other aspects of identity development is included.
Research projects and contributions from participants are emphasized. The course is therefore relevant for many different fields in educational research. Students are given due time for presentation and comments to their phd projects.

Knowledge:
- The candidate has knowledge of theories and interdisciplinary research on democracy and citizenship in education.
Skills:
- The candidate has scientific skills to analyse empirical data using different theories of democracy and citizenship in education.
General competence:
- The candidate is qualified to research on a variety of data in the democracy and citizenship in education.

The course and it’s lecturers is a Nordic cooperation between NTNU, University in Bergen UiB, Stockholm University and Aarhus University DPU Copenhagen. The course is bloc-scheduled with lectures and discussions. Compulsory attendance of 80% is required. The language is English.
Assessment: Accepted attendance and paper.
There is maximum of 25 students.
With less than 5 applicants for the course, the Department for teacher education have the right to scratch the course.

The course is taught at NTNU, autumn 2019.
