Production and Supply Chain Management

Module: Specialisation in logistics and purchasing management

The course focuses on design, planning and control of material and information flow within a factory and in the supply chain.

Topics:

• Supply chain and production strategies
• Development of holistic control models for production and supply chain
• Planning and control of production and inventory
• Production and distribution networks
• Aggregated planning, master planning, and material requirements planning
• Principles for production control (Kanban, Heijunka, Conwip, etc.)
• Industry 4.0, digitalization and ICT (ERP, scheduling, data capture, etc.)
• Coordination, supply chain collaboration and information sharing
• Sustainable production, logistics and supply chain

Knowledge:

After completion, the student should:

• Have in depth knowledge of the key planning and control tasks in production and supply chain
• Be able to use key theories, methods, principles and concepts in planning and control of production and supply chains
• Know the possibilities afforded by Industry 4.0, digitalization and ICT tools

Skills:

After completion, the student should be able to:

• Independently apply acquired knowledge, theory, concepts, and methods to describe and analyse a company’s supply chain
• Use methods and techniques to analyse and develop rational logistics solutions and assess the potential for Industry 4.0 technologies

General competence:

After completion, the student should be able to:

• Carry out an independent research or development project

The course is taught in English and consists of two seminars in Trondheim, with lectures, exercises, and cases with international guest speakers. There will also be a visit to NTNU’s Logistics 4.0 laboratory.

Between seminars there are self-study activities with digital lectures, curriculum, and exercises.

A semester project must be carried out and reported, and guidance to this is offered.
