About this course

Content

Topics include fundamentals of well mechanics and design of well completion for oil and gas wells. The course deals with well components and with the entire system. It addresses the construction and the maintenance of the well. It includes: strength calculation of well equipment, material selection, safety and reliability of mechanical systems.

Learning outcomes

Ingress: The students should develop deep understanding of the technology used to complete and operate hydrocarbon production wells, and should develop knowledge and skill to perform design and analysis of modern well completions.

Knowledge: The students should develop knowledge on the external architecture of a well, on the interior architecture of the well and on the interface between the formation and the wellbore. Students should become knowledge on the aspects affecting cost, productivity and safety of well technology. The students should develop advance knowledge on the methods used to design the wells, construct it, operate it and maintain it.

Skills: The students will develop advanced skills on executing engineering tasks involved in planning, design, analysis, trouble shooting, and repair of wells on land, platform and subsea.

The students should have capabilities to utilize well design software to design well completion that provide cost affective, safe, and productive wells.

The students should develop skills in addressing emerging needs and adapting emerging technologies to well completion design and well operations.

General competence: Expertise in well technology.

Teaching methods

Lectures, discussions, programming and solution of exercises.
The course will be held in English. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
