Educational History and Policy

The course examines important national education reforms after World War II, their ideological basis, content and realisation. The national education reforms are analysed in an ideological, political and social context, nationally and internationally.

How education is governed will be a key element. This means identification and analysis of participants, governance principles and strategies in the education policy reforms. International actors` influence on the Norwegian education policy is also included in this.

The subject gives in-depth knowledge and theoretical understanding of:
- The development of the Norwegian education system in recent times.
- The ideological and political background for the most important education policy reforms.
- Relevant education policy issues.
- Key participants (nationally and internationally) in the field of education policy reforms.
- Norwegian school development in an international and comparative perspective.

Semester paper as evaluation form provides the opportunity to specialize in a chosen topic and training in conducting an independent research project.

A total of 16 hours of lectures given in concentrated form during the first eight weeks, assignments found on it's learning and a two-day exercise seminar of eight hours. Guidelines and requirements for the term paper will be given at the start of the semester. The theme of the paper must be approved by the supervisor by October 15th. The term paper must be between 12 and 15 pages (Times New Roman 12 point, 1.5 line spacing). The deadline for handing in the term paper is November 25th.
