Perspectives on Society, Education and Reproduction

This course will provide an introduction into the pedagogical processes that are oriented towards the relationship between individuals and structures. Key concepts used to study these processes are: socializing, upbringing, learning and education. Based on this, the course will investigate the characteristics of our society and how both people and educational institutions relate to these terms. In addition to this, phenomenon such as social class, gender, ethnicity, power, lifestyle and identity will be explored. The focus will be on social interaction and the area of tension between educational institutions, families and media.

The goal of the course is to develop knowledge about educational processes related to the interaction between structures and individuals. The students will develop skills, independency and curiosity where she / he should be able to handle central educational sociological concepts in written presentation.

Teaching is divided into lectures, seminars and supervision. Normally there are two hours lectures and two hours seminar each week. Lectures, seminars and supervision can be organized in more intensive periods. If less than 10 students sign up for the course it may be canceled.
