Bachelor's Thesis in Paramedic Science

The course includes scientific work and gives an introduction to preparing, and carrying out research, thematically linked to the paramedical profession. The bachelor`s thesis can be a literature review or an empirical project.

Through working on the bachelor's thesis, students will identify and choose a topic related to the paramedical field of knowledge. Students will collect data and thoroughly analyse and document on the data in accordance with scientific research methods and research ethics. The thesis should give an in-depth presentation of a relevant and defined theme based on the programme's learning outcomes, and the competence that the students have achieved in the course.

Knowledge

The student:

• has knowledge of relevant research method(s) and scientific theory
• has knowledge of research ethics and legal aspects related to their own research project
• has knowledge of formulating, justifying, and discussing a current theme relevant to the professional practice within paramedical field
• has knowledge of critically assessing research literature and current research related to the chosen topic of the thesis

Skills

The student:

• develop research proposal, and carries out a relevant project/study in accordance with guidelines for research ethics and privacy
• obtains, evaluates, and use national and international research articles, shows an ability to critically assess, and correctly use references and bibliography
• discusses the chosen subject in relation to the current research question, with relation to empiricism and theory of paramedicine
• chooses the most relevant method to illustrate the topic or the research question
• applies relevant research method(s) for collecting, processing and analysing data, and critically evaluate their own method approach
• collects, complies, analyses, and discusses findings from relevant research articles and other current sources in relation to the current research question
• documents knowledge of scientific theory and research method(s)

General competence

The student:

• explores and discusses theoretical and clinical and/or operative issues in a systematic and reflective manner
• plans and implements a collaborative project that extends over time
• reflects on attitudes related to practicing within the paramedic profession, and chooses relevant knowledge to support these reflections
• work independently and shows critical-analytical use of specialist- and research literature
• plan and carry out a literature study or empirical project in line with ethical requirements and guidelines
• has insight into their own learning requirements, and is able to acquire new knowledge and skills

The subject is taught longitudinal. The students write their project proposal and project plan in groups, and have oral and written presentations.

The course will be taught in English if any exchange students. If there are no exchange students, the course will be taught in Norwegian.
