Master's Thesis in Scandinavian Studies

An academic thesis on a linguistic or literary topic of approx. 15 000-20 000 words in Norwegian, excluding the preface, reference list and appendices. The student chooses the subject and method with guidance from his/her academic adviser. One may choose a didactic approach to the topic. The thesis must include an appendix of up to 1 page in which the student explains the relevance of the work for the teaching profession. All students must also write an abstract of the thesis in English, which should be ½-1 page and placed first in the thesis.

Candidates will have obtained the following qualifications after successfully completing this course:

Skills

The candidate:

• can complete an independent research project on a specialized topic under the guidance of an academic supervisor
• masters scientific argumentation and critical thinking
• can present scientific problems and results extensively in writing
• fulfills the requirements of scientific publishing
• is able to discuss the work's relevance for the teaching profession

Teaching method: Self-study, seminars (master thesis seminar), and individual supervision throughout the course.

Obligatory assignments:

• Approved project draft (approx. 5 pages)
• At least one supervision session, individually or in groups, after the project draft is approved.

Assessment:

An academic thesis of approx. 15 000-20 000 words written in Norwegian. All students must write an abstract of the thesis in English. The abstract should be ½-1 page and placed first in the thesis. The thesis will be submitted in the last semester of study, unless another arrangement is made with the adviser and department.
