Norwegian as a Literacy Subject

The course is based on different aspects of literacy, and it revolves around the production, understanding and assessment of various texts. Methods and concepts from linguistics and literature studies will be applied. The course is based on seminars and requires active student participation.

Knowledge

Candidates who have passed this course can:

• reflect on different topics related to teaching Norwegian in school in a literacy perspective
• explain central concepts and methods of analysis in writing, reading and rhetoric
• explain and evaluate how central concepts and strategies of reading and writing applies in prose and fiction
• explain and reflect on different methods of teaching based on explorations, conversation, and metacognition

Skills

Candidates who have passed this course can:

• make use of various approaches of work and analysis in writing and communicating literature
• develop, explain, and reflect upon a teaching plan for literacy teaching
• use and convey relevant reading strategies in prose and fiction including multimodal texts
• use and diversify various methods of teaching in an appropriate manner
• recognize signs of dyslexia and adjust teaching accordingly
• search for, use and evaluate various scientific texts

The course follows a blended learning design, i.e. a combination of online lessons and campus seminars. Theoretical learning will mostly rely on individual studies and web resources, while campus seminars require active participation.

- Article presentation

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). Obligatory assignments from a previous semester may be approved by the department.
