Old Norse

The objective of this study is to give students greater knowlegdge of Old Norse language structure and, compared to what is expected in NORD1106(NORD1101), broaden the knowledge of Old Norse. The course is composed of the study of a set list of texts, Old Norse grammar at university level, an overview of the history of language, and some secondary literature. NORD2201 together with NORD2202 Runology will give the students an in-depth understanding of older Scandinavian languages.

At the completion of the course, students should demonstrate good knowledge of Old Norse language structure and in variants within the Old Norse language area, both geographical and chronological. In this context, students are expected to comment and argue for placing spatially and temporally un-normalized texts in different genres.

Lectures/group work including writing papers. There will be supervision during the course of the semester. Obligatory activities: Approved reading list and at least 2 approved exercises (the length will be from ½ page and more depending on the exercise). There will be oral/written response (approved/not approved). Students may use an Old Norse dictionary during the exam.
