Nordic literature in context

This course examines a specific literary period or particular relationships between literature and its context. Various genres will be included, and texts may for example be studied in light of international literary trends, other cultural and media contexts, as well as relevant societal conditions. The course content, topics and theories, will vary each year, based on a selection of literary texts from the Nordic language area and a selection of relevant theoretical texts.

Candidates will have obtained the following qualifications after successfully completing this course:

Knowledge:

• Demonstrate a strong understanding of how literary texts can be interpreted in light of various contexts.

Skills:

• Discuss the role of context in shaping our understanding and approach to literary texts.
• Place and analyze individual texts within their relevant contemporary contexts or from current perspectives.

Lectures/seminars.

Obligatory assignments: Up to 3 written assignments and/or oral presentations

Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester).

Obligatory assignments from a previous semester may be approved by the department.
