Forms of linguistic expression (idiomology) and linguistic nuances (pragmatics) will be given greater attention at this level than in previous courses.

By the end of the term students should be able to understand normal conversation, including different dialect variations. Students must be able to read a wide range of genuine Norwegian texts, and in oral and written presentations students will be expected to master different styles.

The aim of the course is to help students become familiar with various forms of Norwegian and to help them learn to use Norwegian to express themselves, both orally and in writing, in a precise, nuanced manner. At the end of the course, the candidate should have the following knowledge and skills:

KNOWLEDGE:

• The candidate's level of knowledge is equivalent to Level C1/C2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)
• The candidate has knowledge about the language situation in Norway

SKILLS:

The candidate

• can express himself precisely both in writing and speech.
• can understand normal speech in Norwegian, included different dialect variations

Up to 5 or 6 hours seminars/group work per week, including listening exercises. (60 hours in total). Students need up until five approved obligatory activities in order to sit the exam. Three of them should be texts in a persuasive genre in addition to a text in another genre. Students may also give an oral presentation during the course.

Attendance is compulsory for the first lecture, and the overall attendance requirement is 80 per cent.
