Course in Norwegian for Refugees

Throughout the course special emphasis will be given to verb forms (tense and mood) and nuances in expression (pragmatics), in addition to further strengthening of the grammar.
Civilization is part of the curriculum in this level, either in the form of a single work, or in the form of free-standing texts of similar size and subject. Some of the subjects may be addressed with literary texts. The intent is to provide students with an insight into modern Norwegian community life and its historical background.

The course content is equivalent to Norwegian for Foreigners level 2 (Autumn Semester) and Norwegian for Foreigners Level 3 (Spring Semester).

Level 4 gives 15 credits in a degree and level 3 and 4 together gives 30 credits. Level 3 alone, as well as level 1 and 2, do not let you earn credits in a degree. You may not apply for financial support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund to cover the costs of these courses.

KNOWLEDGE:
The candidate’s level of knowledge is equivalent to Level B2/C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

- can express themselves in descriptive, narrative and persuasive genres.
- is able to converse on a wide variety of subjects

6 - 10 hours seminars/group work per week, including language laboratory exercises.
Students need to hand in and have approved written papers by the end of the course. One of the written works will be presented orally to the group.

The duration of the oral exam is 15-20 minutes. The written part of the exam lasts 6 hours. The exam is divided into two parts: 1 hour of dictation and 5 hours of testing formal knowledge (grammar and language understanding) and an essay writing of 400-500 words. Dictionaries are not allowed during the written exam.

Separate grades are given for the written and the oral exam. In the final grade the written exam counts 2/3 while the oral exam counts 1/3. Both the written and the oral exam need to be passed in order to pass the exam. Students must retake both parts if they fail either part.


Approved examination's requirements are valid for 4 semesters after approval date.
