History and Theory of Photography

The course provides an introduction to the theory and history of photography. The emphasis is placed on the features that characterize the medium of photography, which involves the study various genres of photography in order to understand more precisely the different roles that photography has played through history, spanning from the pre-photographic era into the digital age. The course will examine the photography and its various kinds of functions, e.g as a social document and a cultural expression.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have extensive insight into both the history of photography and theoretical texts on photography. Through a series of thematic lectures students will learn about photography as a historical and cultural product, as well as sharpen their theoretical evaluation skills of issues relevant to photography.

This course is taught in Norwegian only.

Compulsory assignment:
Students must pass an oral presentation with written documentation before final assessment can be made.

The method of assessment will be a letter-graded 6 hour examination.

Students are required to keep abreast of the results of exercise assignments posted on the department's bulletin boards.
