Music and Film in Theory and Practice

Music has been connected with film since the film medium's infanthood. One important reason for this fact lies in the wish to join the sense of seeing with the sense of hearing. A combination of auditory and visual mechanisms produces a synthesis which is essential for the complete cinematic experience. Movement is a fundamental precondition that musical progressions and moving images have in common. This common denominator allows these two art forms to play together with and against each other, to complete and contrast each other.The music we hear has a decisive influence on how we interpret what we see on the screen. From time to time it all melts together in a way that makes us unaware of the presence of any music at all. On other occasions we may remember the music better than the film itself. In our time we also find examples of music being released from the film to which it was composed for performance in the concert hall.In this course focus is placed upon music's different functions in film. We will examine theories and views on the relationship between music and moving images, and on the use of music and sound in film. These thoughts will be applied to concrete examples on how music and sound have been put to practical use in the history of film.

This course contains combined lectures and seminars in which all enrolled students are expected to actively participate. The seminar sections will include both written and spoken activities. The students are expected to examine the actual curriculum readings carefully before each lecture/seminar.
