Standards

This course explores American Standards across the years c. 1900–1960. A starting point is the Tin Pan Alley-tradition with its composers, like Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers and Harold Arlen. Another point of departure is the Musical Comedies on stage and in film where most of the standards originated. The genre is accordingly treated as general music history. However, there will be opportunity for musical practice by voluntary students.

Knowledge:
A candidate who successfully completes MUSV 3109
– will have an increased knowledge of the Standards and there’s origin.
– will have an increased knowledge of American popular music 1900-1960.
– will have an increased knowledge of American Musical Tradition.

Skills:
A candidate who successfully completes MUSV 3109
– can formulate his/her knowledge in both written and spoken forms, and possibly also apply the knowledge in music practise.

General competence:
A candidate who successfully completes MUSV 3109
– has increased knowledge about American jazz and popular music.

This course contains lectures and seminars in which the students are supposed to actively participate.
