Italian Opera in the 1800s

The course is concentrated around Italian repertoire opera from the 1800s, especially by Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini and Verdi, with the book Divas and Scholars. Performing Italian Opera (University of Chicago 2006) by Philip Gossett as a starting point.

The syllabus is based in research and the editing of opera scores, as well as the contrast between practice (Divas) and theory (Scholars). Great emphasis is laid on the showing of central operas by the previously mentioned composers on DVD. All of this is an important basis for further analysis and the exam.

- has knowledge about important theories, research methods and analytical tools within Italian opera in the 19th century
- has knowledge about central problems within Italian opera in the 19th century

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3103
- can express his/her deepened knowledge in a convincing way, both in writing and speech
- can make his/her own reflections based on, and in the extension of the acquired knowledge
- can utilise the acquired knowledge about analytical tools and research methods on material new and unknown for the examinee
- can reflect about his/her own professional behaviour regarding Italian opera in the 19th century and is able to adjust it under guided supervision
