Principal Instrument and musical interplay

The course is based on Principal Instrument 1, 2 and 3 at the Bachelor's level. Instruction for the principal instrument (individual and group instruction) is provided over two semesters, and requires skills equivalent to the main instrument examination at the Bachelor's level. In addition, classes are given over one semester in musical interplay within a selected practice area, either vocally or vocally/instrumentally.

Students who have a certification in an instrument or vocals from a music conservatory, music college or equivalent education are not eligible for instruction in MUSV3005. These students will take courses in the MUSV31**-series as replacement.

Knowledge:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3005 has advanced knowledge of

• Different vocal/instrumental directions and styles within their main musical area/genre.
• Suitable vocal/instrumental techniques within their musical specialization area(s)/genre(s).
• Suitable musical approaches, herein rehearsal and practice techniques alone and in ensembles.
• Different aspects of presentation.
• Rehearsal and performance of music in a group, vocal or vocal/instrumental within a selected practice area.

Skills:

An examinee with a completed qualification in MUSV3005

• Can work goal-oriented and independently with music performance and subject specialisation.
• Can rehearse and present a vocal/instrumental repertoire within their musical specialisation area(s)/genre(s) at a higher level than what is required in MUSV2022 or MUSV2023.
• Can show musicality, technical skills, the ability to present different types of music and personal expression in practical performance at a higher level than what is required in MUSV2022 or MUSV2023.
• Can rehearse and perform music in concert with others/musical interplay.

Individual and group instruction.

Students with need of piano accompaniment who have classical vocals, strings, brass or woodwind as their principal instrument will receive 4 x 30 min. accompaniment in preparation to their exam, and 1 hour for the exam itself.

Because of overlap due to comparable learning goals, students can only register once for the individual levels of instruction within the Department of Music’s principal instrument courses.

The class in vocal practices is instructed in the fall semester of MUSV3005, and is assessed with pass/fail. The class in vocal practices must be passed in order to take the final examination on your principal instrument.

Furthermore, to pass the course the student must attend a minimum of 80% of the lectures.
